Its part of Ken's DNA and built into Ken's name to be outspoken!...And thats what makes Ken a stand-up guy confronting nonsense in the co-op housing sector.

Drowning in dust at Northview Meadows co-op

durhamregion.com

June 6, 2006

By Jillian Follert

"Drowning in dust"

"OSHAWA - Nancy Rogers' apartment looks like a winter wonderland."

"Every surface, from the floor to the TV screen, is dusted in a layer of white - but it's not Christmas and this isn't snow."

Ms. Rogers and the other sixth floor residents at Northview Meadows Co-op on Pentland Street, are drowning in drywall dust, after a routine renovation project went awry earlier this week."

According to tenants, a company was hired to strip away peeling wallpaper in the sixth floor hallway, and replace it with a fresh coat of paint."

Along the way the walls were sanded, but tenants said workers failed to use ventilation machines or seal off the apartment doorways."

"The result? White dust everywhere."

"It really can't be good to be breathing this stuff in," said tenant Curtis Edmunds, whose entire apartment is covered. "It's all over my laundry, it's in the cracks in my keyboard, it's in-between the stuff on the shelves, it's everywhere."

"Aside from the property damage and clean-up challenges, the residents are concerned about health risks."

"Ken Gorman, director of environmental health with the Durham Region Health Department, said drywall compound is classified as an irritant. Exposure can cause inflammation and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs."

"It's unpleasant," he said. "This is why people wear masks and seal off vents when they do sanding like this at home."

"Tenants on the sixth floor have complained of breathing problems and eye irritation as they try to clean up the mess. The floor is home to at least one resident with emphysema and another confined to a wheelchair."

"I have asthma and I can feel it when I breathe," Ms. Rogers said Thursday as she surveyed the mess in her apartment. "I took my cats to my parents house and I'm going there too, there's no way I can stay here like this."

"Mr. Gorman confirmed that a health inspector from the department visited the building on Thursday and observed that there was enough dust to prompt concern."

"The inspector was in contact with Jo-Anne McDermott, president of the building's board of directors, and asked that dust be cleaned up immediately. In the meantime, it was also requested that all other renovations be put on hold until this mater is resolved and air quality controls are instated, and that the Ministry of Labour be informed of the situation."

"In a letter sent to all sixth floor residents on June 7, Ms. McDermott acknowledged that there was "considerable dust left behind," after the renovations, and stated that the building's insurance company was being contacted."

"At press time, members of the board had not responded to requests for comment or to provide information about the company responsible for renovations."
